Representation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in Czech media coverage

This master's thesis focuses on the image of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Czech media, specifically on the presence of bias in news coverage. The thesis examines what, if any, elements of media bias are present in Czech media coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The theoretical part of the thesis describes bias and related concepts, and then discusses the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including a closer look at Czech- Israeli and Czech-Palestinian relations. The thesis then presents selected foreign and Czech research that examines the media portrayal of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As a method, the thesis uses quantitative content analysis and analyses news articles published in the five most read online media during Israel-Palestine crisis in May 2021. The analysis focuses on the presence of contextual information about the conflict, the labelling of actions, actors and territories, and the way in which victims are reported. The results show the picture of the conflict presented by the Czech media is incomplete and distorted from different perspectives. However, the results do not show that the coverage is clearly biased in favour of (or against) the Israeli or Palestinian side.

Comparison of the Foreign Policy of Donald Trump and Barack Obama with Respect to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

This thesis analyses and then compares the approaches of the two US presidents Barack Obama (2009-2017) and Donald Trump (2017-2021) to a resolution of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict. The thesis aims to answer the research question, which of the two presidents played a greater mediating role in the peace process of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The main research is complemented by two additional research questions: firstly, whether the American role of mediator or the role of judge was more beneficial to the progress of the conflict peace process during the Obama and Trump terms. And secondly, in what ways did Obama and Trump set the stage for the future continuation of the Israeli- Palestinian peace process, in other words, which of their decisions regarding the peace process have the potential to contribute to the future resolution of the conflict. The thesis includes analyses of the strategies and policy decisions of both presidents in the context of the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, during their terms in office. Media Image of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict in 2021

The bachelor thesis studies the media image of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Czech media in 2021. The Defender of the Walls / The Sword of Jerusalem is the name of the armed conflict that took place in the territory of Israel and the Palestinian Authority in May 2021. Although it is the same armed conflict, the two opposing sides call it differently, namely Defender of the Wall by Israel and Sword of Jerusalem by the Palestinian Authority. The media image of the conflict may be similar - same conflict, different media interpretation. Therefore, the aim of the bachelor thesis is to find the frames through which Czech online newspapers (Aktuálně.cz and Novinky.cz) reported on the conflict. First, however, the theoretical part of the thesis introduces how the media construct reality and how framing actually works. Along with this, the theoretical part mentions the existing research on the framing of the Israeli- Palestinian conflict or a search of existing knowledge. The thesis then provides insight into the historical and current context of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, which is central to the orientation of the issue. Israel's security as German national interest: German historical commitment to Israel

This thesis analyses the connection between Israel's security and Germany's reason of state and examines the historically derived moral commitment of Germany to Israel. Despite the dark historical background, Germany and Israel have managed to develop close bilateral ties and intensive partnership. Nonetheless, the relationship remains very complex and the role of the past is still very significant. Germany still feels a strong sense of responsibility for Israel's security, and its moral commitment to Israel remains to be one of the most important factors determining Germany's policies towards the Middle East. The thesis provides answers to the following research questions: What is the role of Israel in Germany's reason of state? And What does the connection of Israel's security and Germany's reason of state mean in concrete terms, with a special focus on Germany's position towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict? The theoretical and conceptual framework of the thesis is built on the constructivist approach to international relations. Europeanization of the Czech Foreign policy and the impact of the Presidency in the Council of the EU: The case of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

This diploma thesis applies the theoretical concept of Europeanization on a research of the Czech foreign policy and its changes in relation to the presidency of the EU Council. As a case study, it analyses different Czech and EU's positions towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and then by comparison of both levels it determines the misfit between Czech and the EU's policies in the mentioned agenda. From historical point of view and from contemporary perspective as well, the Czech Republic is famous for very pro-Israeli attitudes. On the other hand, the EU is significantly focused on supporting of the Palestinians and building the Palestinian state. The research is divided into three periods: before the Czech Presidency of the EU in the years 2004-2008, during the Czech Presidency and then after the presidency until the end of 2010. The aim of the research is to evaluate changes of the misfit between the Czech domestic attitudes and the EU's positions by the example of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict's issues and then to find out whether the Czech foreign policy has been europeanized during the studied period. The Legal Status of a Resistance Movement and the Analysis of its Acts Within the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict brings up many questions considering and reaching into several different spheres, including the spheres of law. This thesis focuses on the question of the organized resistance movement against occupation and on its legal status. It is known that the inhabitants of every occupied territory are allowed to protect themselves and their territory from the occupier, thus they are allowed to resist the occupation and to claim a recognition of their resistance movement and of its acts as legal acts. Although the resistance movement is a well known term, there is no official definition of this movement and its legal framework is quite narrow; it only establishes the characteristics needed in order for its members to gain a status and a legal protection similar to the regular combatants. It is limited from its name that the resistance movement against occupation may only exists in the territory where an actual occupation takes place. The Intractability of The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Comparing The Delegitimizing Discourse in Political Speeches by Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas from 2015 until 2018

This bachelor's thesis views and analyzes the Israel-Palestinian conflict through the lens of Louis Kriesberg's intractable conflict theory (Kriesberg, 1998) and Daniel Bar-Tal's theory of delegitimization (Bar-Tal,1998). This work compares mutual delegitimization and the discourse of the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas by using a thematic discourse analysis. This work builds specifically on the theory of delegitimization of Neta Oren and Daniel Bar-Tal (Oren, Bar-Tal, 2007), which consists of five dimensions of delegitimization: dehumanization, trait characterization, outcasting, political labels, and group comparison. A sample of speeches of Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas from the years from 2015 until 2018 has been analyzed. The delineation is chosen in this way since in 1994, peace accords between Israel and Palestine broke down. Also in this period character of conflicts changed to so-called Third intifada, which consists of series of smaller frequent conflicts. UNRWA and its activities in selected Middle East countries

The main aim of this master thesis is analyze role of UNRWA in the Middle East in 1950- 2010 based on the collected data. The main focus is on the population growth tendencies which are often criticized as the result of the UNRWA politics and which might be prolonging the conflict in the area. Second part of this thesis focuses on the elementary and preparatory education at UNRWA schools. Based on the research done, it was concluded that UNRWA isn't responsible of Palestinian refugee growth as it is the result of population growth in region and the result of foreign events. In question of elementary and preparatory education, the decreasing percentage tendencies in attendance at UNRWA run schools have been observed despite multiplication of the refugee population. This might be a result of failing to accommodate to the needs of Palestinian refugees.

The Analysis of British Parliamentary Debate in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict between 2010 and 2015: The Comparison of Political Parties' Stances towards the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Bachelor thesis The Analysis of British Parliamentary Debate in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict between 2010 and 2015: The Comparison of Political Parties' Stances towards the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict deals with the stances of major British political parties, the Conservative Party, the Labour Party and to lesser extent also the Liberal Democrats, towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The thesis at first thoroughly examines through an analysis of parliamentary debates in 2010-2015 the stances of concerned political parties towards three important aspects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - the issue of recognition of Palestinian state on bilateral level, the issue of enhanced status of Palestine in the United Nations and the issue of some form of economic sanctions against the Israel or against the Jewish settlement in the West Bank. In subsequent comparison main dissimilarities and similarities are identified in stances of concerned political parties. In the end the thesis answers the question, whether the stances of political parties in question towards Israeli- Palestinian conflict falls within the confines of traditional bipartisan consensus in the foreign policy between the Labour Party and the Conservative party or not.
